South East Asia Cycling
Northern Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia by bike and mini bus. Cycle, trek, elephant driving lessons, kayaking and world heritage sites amongst other activities on this very full three week guided tour.
We begin in Hanoi where one of my favorite activities is sitting on a busy corner on a tiny plastic stool with beer in hand watching the street life. But there won't be much time for this as after a quick trip to the very majestic Halong Bay, we will be off to Dien Bien Phu )where the French were routed by the Viet Minh) on our way to Laos. This is steep, remote country and if it is similar to other hill regions we have travelled through, should be a delight.
Once across the border we travel down the Nam Ou river on kayaks and long tail boats taking a day walk into remote areas to the 100 waterfalls valley and visiting the Pak Ou caves before arriving in Luang Prabang.
Luang Prabang is a World Heritage City beside the Mekong. Not only is it a great place to explore with excellent food, there are many interesting side trips including a mahoot (elephant driver) training school, kayaking, waterfall tours and cooking lessons.
After much discussion we have decided to replace the 3 day zip lining with time at Don Det exploring the 4,000 Islands area, by bike, boat and on foot. Expect to see dolphins on this the widest part of the Mekong River.
We cross into Cambodia and have a very sober day vising the Killing Fields of Phnom Penh before flying on to Siem Reap to marvel at Angkor Wat.
The trip starts in Hanoi on Saturday 9 November 2013 and finishes in Ho Chi Minh City on 28 November. The price of the land cost as the trip is currently structured is NZ$4,530 (about US$3,570). This price includes 3 internal fights. We are continuing to tune the trip to accommodate particular interests and these might have a small impact on the price. (Note this is a slight increase due to the big decline in the NZ$).
Ross Bidmead is leading the trip and will be departing New Zealand on the morning of 9 November (dateline time savings) and arriving back in NZ on 30 November. Trip members are welcome to travel with Ross and we have finalised a flight package – ($1,700 return NZ- Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City- NZ).
